East Africa Breweries Limited (EABL) through its subsidiary Kenya Breweries Ltd (KBL) is now looking for farmers in Kakamega County to grow sorghum on contract basis. This is after a successful contract farming between the brewer and over 30,000 farmers from Kisumu, Busia, Homa Bay, Siaya, and Migori counties.
We would like farmers in this county to grow white sorghum as all our contracted farmers will be assured of market,” said Jane Karuku KBL’s managing director.
EABL is set to open a Sh15 billion brewery in the area. The brewery under the KBL is said to be 80 per cent complete and will help Kakamega residents with numerous opportunities such as job opportunities and sorghum farming being at the forefront.
KBL had built new Sh15 billion plant in Kisumu providing direct market for farmers in the region.

Sorghum can withstand dry conditions (600mm annual rainfall) and remain green at very low moisture level. It can do well in very poor soils and most varieties of sorghum produce much more forage than maize.
Currently a bag of 90 kilograms of sorghum retails at Sh3908 in major countries across the country. KBL pays Sh30 per kilo.
