Of the KSh28.35b deals confirmed for investment in agricultural projects during the first investors summit in Narok County, KSh510m will go to the wheat and milling plants.
Maha Lakshmi Roller Mills and Upland Crops companies, each signed deals worth KSh255m to set up the plants in the county, with the promise of creating 200 new jobs.
Mahalakshmi Roller Flour Mills Pvt Ltd is a Private Company incorporated in India in 1982, while Upland Crops is part of the United Millers Group, which has been in business in Kenya since 1977.
Talks are ongoing with a third company to set up another milling plant at the same investment, while promising to create 150 jobs.
Raw materials
Narok County occupies an area of 17,944 sq km with the land that is suitable for wheat and maize cultivation being approximately 1.15 million acres.
The current average annual wheat production in the county is 200,000MT while the average maize production is approximately 300,000MT.
The summit
A total of KSh54.7b in investments, spanning across Agriculture, Education, Healthcare, Infrastructure, Energy and Tourism, was confirmed during the December 3-4 summit. The new projects are estimated to bring a total of 3825 new jobs.
A further KSh132b investment, with the promise of 4750 new jobs, is in negotiation.
